Supermarket Standoff: Frozen Lasagna

I just got off the phone with an employee of a New York City Whole Foods. I called to confirm some prices mentioned in this post. When I said, "I'm calling about frozen lasagna," the employee said, "Mmm, frozen lasagna, that sounds so good." I thought, "It does? Weird."

Frozen lasagna is a savior to many busy home cooks--especially home cooks with a family to feed--and for that reason, most people have held a special place for it in their heart since childhood.

We set out to decide which brand is the best and how each compares to homemade. We used our quickest lasagna recipe, which calls for pre-made ingredients, thinking it would provide the best basis for comparison. (A lasagna with homemade sauce would have beat the pants off of any frozen brand; our quick recipe calls for jarred tomato sauce.) The only fair way to do this was a blind taste test, so that no one on staff knew which lasagna they were tasting as they scored.

The results were surprising. The homemade recipe was the best, as expected, but the second-place winner--a surprising brand--wasn't far behind at all. And a popular organic brand was dead last! Check out the results and tell us what your favorite frozen lasagna brands are. The lasagna lineup, (pictured above), from left: Michael Angelo's, homemade, Amy's, Stouffer's, Trader Joe's.
